Sheffield University research could offer hope for MND sufferers

Sheffield University researchers have moved a step closer to a treatment that could tackle a faulty gene which triggers a form of motor neurone disease.

Scientists have begun groundbreaking research to develop a gene therapy that, if successful, could cure one form of the devastating neurological disease which affects more than 5,000 people in the UK.

Until now all available treatments and drug trials conducted across the world have failed to effectively halt its progression.

Professor Mimoun Azzouz said the project could offer a real beacon of hope for patients and their families.
