SHEFFIELD University students are lacing up their walking boots for the 10th anniversary of their annual ‘Bummit’ charity hitchhike – the world’s biggest student-run charity hitch-hiking event.
Some 400 students will set off from the university’s students’ union building off Western Bank on Monday and Wednesday to hitchhike to the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius.
They are already celebrating raising a record £16,000 from their one-day ‘Baby Bummit’ hitchhike to Brighton.
Money has been split between Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity’s Make It Better campaign which received £5,500; Haven House, which received £5,408 to provide safe temporary emergency accommodation and support to women and children who are fleeing physical, emotional or sexual abuse; Cecily’s Fund, a charity in Zambia that supports Aids orphans and focuses on education as a way out of poverty and Broomhall Breakfast Club, which provides a free breakfast for homeless and vulnerable people in Sheffield every Friday morning.
Scott Evans, one of the students taking part next week, said: “Having raised a record total in November, we’re hoping to make Big Bummit the most successful event in its history.”
Students are challenged to spend as little money as possible during their eight-day trip.
This time the group is raising money for charities including Sheffield Young Carers Project, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Water For Kids.
Scott is hoping plenty of people will offer their support to the students.
He said: “If anyone is driving towards the M1 and sees some cold, bedraggled students in bright red hoodies on the side of the road, just know that stopping and giving them a lift will make their day.”
