Sheffield lecturers go on strike for a day as pay battle goes on

Staff at both Sheffield universities went on strike today, the third one-day stoppage in a long-running campaign to seek an improved pay deal.

Members of UCU, Unison and Unite set up pickets this morning before marching to Barker’s Pool for a noon rally.

The unions are protesting against a one per cent pay offer which they argue means an effective cut in members’ wages for the fifth year in a row.

UCU members are also planning another two-hour walk out next Monday - a move that will cost lecturers at Sheffield Hallam a full day’s pay.

The dispute in Sheffield has received national attention after it was revealed Sheffield University’s vice-chancellor Professor Sir Keith Burnett had received a pay rise of 26 per cent.
