GIRLS at a Sheffield college are getting their kicks from football after setting up a new under-19s team.
The Hillsborough College side was founded in September and is already proving a force to be reckoned with in a tough regional league.
In their best performance to date the women defeated Bradford College 9-3.
Sport at the college in general has taken on a new lease of life after principal Heather Smith decided to clear the timetable on Wednesday afternoons.
The campus has signed up to British Colleges Sports, an organisation which provides students with the opportunity to play their counterparts in competitive leagues.
Previously students played sport only on an informal basis through a student enrichment programme.
Rebecca Vickers, captain of the new women’s football team, said: “Playing in the league games is a great opportunity for us to enhance our skills.
“I’m really pleased with the team’s performances so far.
“They were really on form against Bradford and made the score comfortable at the final whistle.”
Mrs Smith said: “I am delighted our students now have the opportunity to improve their skills and play to a high standard in competitive sports leagues against regional colleges.
“This move complements students’ academic education provided at college and enables them to get even more out of our excellent training facilities.”
