SAFARI so good for a school’s campaign to improve road safety – after a zebra stopped by to highlight children’s campaign.
Zak the Zebra, the mascot of national road safety charity Brake, teamed up with pupils from Dore Primary School in Sheffield to encourage motorists to slow their speed in the area.
Children and teachers armed themselves with placards and banners and took to the streets to highlight the ‘Go 20’ campaign, which calls on local motorists to drive at 20mph or below around homes, schools and shops.
Sue Hopkinson, headteacher at Dore Primary School, said: “Our children would be far safer if everyone who drives in the community pledged to reduce their speed to 20mph.
“It is widely acknowledged that lower speeds prevent casualties and create a safer environment for people on foot and bicycle.
“That’s why we’re appealing to local drivers and parents to come on board with this, and do everything in their power to ensure children can walk and cycle to school and in their neighbourhood without fear or threat.”
Clare Morrison, campaigns officer for road safety charity Brake, said: “It’s great to see Dore Primary flying the flag for slower speeds and safer walking and cycling, alongside our mascot Zak.
“It’s so important we make our streets and communities safer for people – especially children – to walk and cycle.
“Kids should be able to get to school, the park or to see friends, without being endangered – it’s crucial for their health.”
