School staff set to strike in Rotherham

Support staff at a Rotherham special school are taking strike action today over a long running dispute which they say is threatening the jobs of four workers.

Abbey School at Kimberworth has been going through a major restructuring process which has seen a number of teachers opt for redundancy.

GMB, which represents the support staff, say they voted unanimously to strike and are planning further action at a later date.

Workers say they also have concerns about health and safety issues and poor pupil behaviour.

GMB branch secretary Eric Batty said: “Management were warned following the last restructure that such an upheaval would negatively impact upon children at the school.

“School support staff and teachers who knew the children best were left with no other alternative but to take redundancy. This has had a detrimental impact on students and has contributed in part to the behavioural issues in school.”

A school spokesperson said: “We are continuing to negotiate with the unions regarding any issues they have. We remain committed to our vision of providing outstanding provision for the students.”
