Schoolchildren enjoying the eco-friendly life by growing their own food, cultivating flowers and helping wildlife to thrive have been rewarded for their efforts with a big prize.

The pupils from Northfield School in Dronfield are all aged seven to 11, and meet up for a regular gardening club which involves growing fruit and vegetables to serve during school dinners.

They also compost waste and have created ‘bee hotels’ and habitats for frogs.

The group has been handed a commemorative plaque and £1,000 by the Co-operative Group, which runs a programme called the Green Schools Revolution.

Teaching assistant Liz Marsden said: “We are thrilled to have won this award.”
