New face for trustees’ board

THE University of Sheffield Students’ Union has appointed a new member to its board of trustees.

Former Sheffield Students’ Union president John O’Leary is a journalist and education consultant, who edited The Times Higher Education Supplement from 2002 until 2007 and was Education Editor of The Times for 10 years before that, having joined the newspaper in 1990 as Higher Education Correspondent.

From 2008 to 2010, he edited the monthly Policy Review magazine and in 2011 won the Ted Wragg Award for Sustained Contribution to Education Journalism.

John, who was president of Sheffield Students’ Union in 1973-74, writes regularly on education for The Times, and is a frequent speaker at international conferences.

The board of trustees is responsible for the governance and financial and strategic management of the union.
