Improving Sheffield college one of best in country

MORE students are completing courses and receiving qualifications at Sheffield College than ever before, newly released statistics reveal.

A total of 84 per cent of students are now successfully passing their courses, according to the college’s latest performance review – up 11 per cent over the last two years.

It means Sheffield is among the top performing colleges nationally, based on figures for the academic year 2011-12.

Chief executive Heather MacDonald said: “We are committed to becoming an outstanding college and this is a significant milestone towards achieving that goal.

“I am absolutely delighted with the progress and I would like to congratulate all of our staff and our students on this fantastic success.”

Factors in the improving pass rate include an innovative scheme that has improved students’ motivation and keep them on courses.

A new team of tutor mentors has been introduced across all Sheffield College campuses, which include Hillsborough, Norton, Peaks and Sheffield City College.

Around 35 tutor mentors have been appointed since September 2011, who act as a listening ear and offer one-to-one practical support and advice to any students who have questions or concerns about issues inside and outside the classroom.

They also ensure any students with concerns have their queries dealt with so they keep on track, attend their lectures, stay motivated and complete their course.

“Our tutor mentors are excellent role models.

“They help young people achieve their potential, support them to become independent learners and equip them with the confidence to find solutions to barriers that may inhibit their progress to ensure they commit to success,” Mrs MacDonald said.
