Good progress for all pupils at Sheffield school

Every pupil is making good progress at a Sheffield school where almost all the children are from ethnic minority groups, an inspection team found.

Tinsley Nursery Infants has been rated ‘good’ – an improvement from its last check-up when the school was judged to be satisfactory.

The youngsters usually had very low starting points in their reading, writing and maths when they started classes.

And inspectors note the vast majority of children spoke little or no English when they started school.

But by the time they were ready to move on to the juniors, their standards were at or above national averages.

Inspectors found the school’s quality of teaching had improved and was now consistently good - with some that was outstanding.

Often pupils arrived at the school at short notice with little or no previous experience of education, but they were well supported and made rapid progress.

There was also very good provision for disabled and special needs youngsters, enabling them to do well and catch up with other pupils.

Pupils behaved well in lessons and around the school, being keen to learn and make good contributions in their lessons.

The children told inspectors they loved school and felt safe and happy there.

Decisive actions had been taken to reduce absence, which were having positive results, with attendance levels improving.

New senior teachers were making an impact under the guidance of the leadership team, and as a result Ofsted felt the school was well placed to improve further.

But inspectors felt there was still work to do as too few of the most able pupils reached higher standards in maths.

The children also did not have sufficient access to some of the latest modern technology.
