College moves to boost staff and student safety levels

A South Yorkshire college has installed an automated defibrillator to improve safety standards for staff and students.

The device, supplied by Martek Medical of Manvers, has been placed in Dearne Valley College’s sports centre in Wath-upon-Dearne.

Shaun Woodward, centre manager, said: “Fortunately, there has never been a case of sudden cardiac arrest on our premises, but we didn’t want to wait until it happened before taking action – because then it’s too late and one young life lost is one too many.

“We decided to install the defibrillator behind the reception desk in our sports centre, which means that, should a sudden cardiac arrest occur, we would be able to respond within four minutes, significantly increasing chances of survival.”
