BARNSLEY Council is urging people against paying firms for making applications for council tax refunds.

The borough council said it has received a number of calls from residents who have been contacted by firms suggesting that they may have been paying too much council tax, and could be eligible for a re-banding and a refund.

But a spokeswoman said: “Experience suggests people can be misled into entering into costly administration arrangements with agents.

“The council advises that council tax payers can themselves appeal against the banding of their property, free, by contacting the Valuation Office Agency on 0114 289 4600.”

Further information about the grounds for making an appeal is available at www.voa.gov.uk
