Council tax rise will pay for free alarms

Fire chiefs say an increase in the service’s share of council tax will protect free home safety checks for vulnerable households.

The budget-setting meeting of South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue ‘s governing authority heard the money would generate £400,000 a year and help pay for free smoke alarms . The authority’s share of band D council tax has risen by £1.26 a year.
