Council stung into action over nettles

A WOMAN has finally won a month-long battle to get Sheffield Council to cut down "horrendous" nettles at the side of a footpath.

Rose Wilkinson, of Rowdale Crescent, Frecheville, first contacted Street Force at the beginning of June, then almost three weeks ago and finally last week but still nothing was done.

In desperation, she contacted The Star for help and, after raising the problem on her behalf with council bosses, the weeds were gone within 24 hours.

Rose said the overgrown nettles and weeds, on a steep footpath between Youlgreave Drive and Birley Moor, made life difficult for people in the area walking to and from bus stops on the main road.

The 58-year-old, who is partially-sighted, said: "The problem is horrendous.

"A lot of people need to use the handrail to steady themselves on the steep part but the nettles have grown so high they get stung. Last year, the same thing happened.

"I'm just so fed up with it when we pay all this council tax."

Rose was delighted after the nettles were finally cut down but said it should not have needed so much effort for the council to take action.

A Sheffield Council spokesman said workers were sent to Frecheville after Rose's complaints.

But there are two footpaths between Youlgreave Drive and Birley Moor Road and they could only immediately clear nettles from the side of one.

He added there was "not a straightforward solution" to the other footpath, which Rose uses, because most weeds are growing from an nearby garden.

However, the work has now been carried out and the council was "liaising with the owner of the garden" to keep the weeds under control.
