Council objections based on competition

Have your say

How interesting it is to know the council is hesitating over its decision to allow planning permission for the proposed Ikea development at Tinsley on the basis of objections from John Lewis.

For years the Federation of Small Businesses has objected to the multiplicity of new store planning applications by the “big four” supermarkets on the basis that each new supermarket sounds the death knell for dozens of small independent businesses – and the jobs they support – within a five- mile radius of each successive development site.

On each occasion our objections have been overruled on the basis that competition issues cannot be considered in deciding planning applications.

Yet here we have an example of the council doing precisely what for years it has maintained it cannot do.
