Sheffield Council leader Julie Dore has called on all the authority’s members to sign up for The Star Walk.

Coun Dore made the appeal in a motion which went before a meeting of the full council yesterday.

The motion gave the council’s full support to The Star Walk and our efforts to raise £150,000 for a Women of Steel statue.

In it, Coun Dore also urged members of the public to join in and get behind the campaign to recognise ‘these amazing women’ who stepped into the breach, producing tanks, planes and ships, when the men were sent to the frontline during World War Two.

She thanked four Women of Steel – Kathleen Roberts, Kit Sollitt, Ruby Gascoigne and Dorothy Slingsby – for being the leading voices and taking the appeal for official recognition to Downing Street and the Ministry of Defence.

The motion read: “This council believes these women deserve a permanent memorial in recognition of the women who worked in the steel mills during two world wars, and recognises these women are an inspiration. Our city is proud of their achievements.”

The statue by artist Martin Jennings is intended as a permanent reminder of all Women of Steel.

The Star Walk 2013 is a one-mile lap of Hillsborough Park so all ages, including the former Women of Steel, who are now aged in their 80s and 90s, can take part.

Many families are doing the walk in memory of their mums, sisters, aunts and grandmas who died before receiving any recognition for their war work.

Some will be wearing fancy dress and several veteran Star Walkers have signed up to share their stories of past events.

The walk starts at 11am on Sunday, April 28 - beginning and ending at Hillsborough Sports Arena.

Entry is £10 for adults and £5 for children with all ages welcome. You can register by using the form below, visiting Star Walk or by calling our hotline on 0114 252 1299.
