Corus trainees help with community centre revamp

GRADUATES from two South Yorkshire steelworks got stuck in with paintbrushes and rollers to give a community centre a much-needed facelift.

Trainees from Corus in Stocksbridge and Rotherham carried out the work at Arbourthorne Community Centre as part of the Corus Graduate Challenge - an annual project to encourage graduates to carry out work in the community.

The UK Steel Enterprise donated cash from their social fund, providing a sizeable donation towards the cost of materials for the renovation.

Sheffield solicitors Ashton Morton Slack and local DIY retailers B&Q, Homebase, Focus and Stokes Paints also helped out, donating their time, materials and equipment.

Centre manager Mark Boyles said it was great that the premises - used for everything from IT classes to line dancing sessions - had received the revamp.

He said: "Over time the building has started to look tired so this work, spearheaded by the volunteers from Corus, has made it welcoming and bright for future generations to use."

Local residents also did their bit and helped out with some of the painting and plastering.

Pat Topham, who lives nearby, said: "I have used this centre for years for different courses and it is nice to see it freshly painted. I did my bit, even if it was just making tea and coffee for those doing the hard work!"
