Cops hit back in bridge row
BRITISH Transport Police have hit back at claims they "assisted" East Midlands Trains enforcing ticket barriers at Sheffield Station.
Sheffield Council leader Paul Scriven claimed police accompanied workers from the train firm as they checked tickets of people crossing the station footbridge.
Chf Supt Terry Nicholson said: "Officers were not in attendance to stop people from crossing the bridge and did not issue any cautions to campaigners, or any other members of the public at the station as has been recently reported.
"The role of British Transport Police is to ensure the railway environment remains a safe place to travel and work.
"We are impartial, however aggressive behaviour and violence directed towards railway staff or other users will not be tolerated and officers will not hesitate to take action against those responsible."
