Consultation over giant wind turbine application

A FIRM which hopes to build five of the largest on-shore wind turbines in the country near Stocksbridge will unveil new mock-up photos of how they would look at two community consultation events.

Evelop UK is set to submit further information in support of a bid to build the 410ft structures at Sheep House Heights beside the Stocksbridge bypass near Midhopestones, overlooking the Langsett Valley.

The exhibitions are aimed at sharing information which stems from consultations with Barnsley Council, Natural England, the RSPB and the Highways Agency.

Opponents say the giant structures, which would be just outside the Peak National Park, would ruin the view. And they would be another step towards turning the area between Stocksbridge and Penistone into 'the windfarm capital of the country'.

There are currently 13 85m turbines at Spicer Hill near Penistone. A planning application has also been submitted for three 100m turbines at Blackstone Edge, near Royd Moor.

Evelop says the Sheep House Heights windfarm would generate enough electricity to power more than 9,000 homes.

Olly Buck, project manager for Evelop, said: "We are committed to keeping the local community fully informed at all stages and that's why we've set up these fresh consultations.

"I'd urge people to come along to see the new photo montages, to talk to us about any issues they might have, and to find out why we think this location is such a great place for a windfarm."

The exhibitions are at The Venue, Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, on March 12 from 10am to 7pm, and at St Andrew's Methodist Church Hall, High Street, Penistone, on March 13, from 8am to 5pm.
