SHEFFIELD has experienced the fifth biggest traffic growth of any British city over a six month period this year - but is one of the least congested.
According to research by sat nav company TomTom, only Oxford, Belfast, Bolton and Southampton has experienced more traffic growth than Sheffield between March and September this year.
But Sheffield was ranked only 20th in a list of the ‘most traffic clogged cities in the UK’, also compiled by the firm.
TomTom said road congestion is estimated to cost the UK economy £20 billion a year in lost production.
The research comes as the Government announced plans to raise motorway speed limits to 80 mph to reduce travelling times for motorist.
