Condolences: Paul Birch

FORMER Doncaster Rovers midfielder Paul Birch has passed away aged 46.

Birch, who played 142 top flight games for Aston Villa before joining Wolves in a 400,000 deal, was brought to Belle Vue by manager Kerry Dixon at the start of the 1996-97 season.

He was a regular in the Rovers side until being sold to Exeter City the following March after clashing with self-styled benefactor Ken Richardson.

Birch spent two seasons with the Devon club before hanging up his boots at the end of the 1998-99 season.

He was diagnosed as suffering from bone cancer last year.
