Condolences: David Mellor
CUTLERY king David Mellor - the Sheffield-born designer famous for influencing styles in Britain for half a century - has died aged 78.
David, who learned his trade at the old Sheffield College of Art, received an OBE in 1981 and the CBE in 2001, and in 2006 was given a lifetime achievement award by the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Best known for his modern cutlery, manufactured at his purpose-built Round Building factory in Hathersage, David also had a wider impact on everyday life.
Among his creations were simplified traffic lights now common in towns and cities all over the UK, bus shelters, and controversial square pillar boxes for the Post Office.
He also designed outdoor seating, fountains, teapots, tools and disposable cutlery, more recently working with his son Corin.
David trained as a silversmith and went on to the Royal College of Art . He opened his first silversmithing workshop in Sheffield in 1954 and is a member of the Sheffield Walk of Fame.
