SOUTH Yorkshire MP John Healey has welcomed a government climb-down on plans to alter compensation payments for crime victims.
He was due to sit on the legislation committee that would have scrutinised the proposed changes to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.
But at the first committee meeting, plans were dropped.
The Wentworth and Dearne Labour MP said: “The government should not have contemplated these cuts that would have penalised victims.”
The CICS proposed cutting all compensation for about half of those currently eligible, and reducing it for others.
