COMIC-CRAZY Mike Morley has turned his hobby into a essential guide for others who share his interests.

Mike, who has been collecting comics for 60 years, has one of the largest collections of British comics from the 1950s, with about 500 of them.

Now the 67-year-old has put some of what he believes to be some of the best adventurers into a book, which he hopes will appeal to fellow enthusiasts across the country.

His collection includes long-forgotten titles such as Ghostly Weird, Captain ‘Space’ Kingley and When Worlds Collide.

Mike, from Sprotbrough, said: “I was obsessed with horror and sci-fi comics, so I started buying them when I was eight years old.

“I used to buy them and then run around to all the neighbours’ houses to see of any of the children had comics they wanted to swap.

“In 1976, I read a book about American comics from the ‘50s and decided I wanted to build up a collection of British comics.

“Over the years I ended up with a wonderful collection of about 500 comics.”

The Pictorial Guide to British 1950s Sci-Fi and Horror Comic Books reproduces covers and pages of many of the books in former Doncaster Royal Infirmary art therapist Mike’s collection.

Mike said many of the graphic comics were shortlived, because of concerns at the time that they were bad for children.

Mike is already looking at publishing another book in the future, with ’50s memorabilia such as annuals and film posters.

His book is available priced £14.95 from Blase Books, Hazelwood, Birchfield Road, Redditch, B97 6PU, or from the Blase Books online store on eBay.
