'Come clean on council job cuts' plea

CALLS have been made for Sheffield Council to "come clean" on how many jobs will be axed due to massive spending cuts, as the first phase of savings were approved by councillors.

Trade unionists protested outside the Town Hall before ruling Lib Dems voted to axe 6.7 million from the budget for the current financial year, including 3.15m from children's services. A further 200m is to be axed over the next four years.

Council leader Coun Paul Scriven said more money would be saved this year by not spending government grants and leaving vacant posts empty.

Opposition Labour councillors did not make any alternative proposals.

But Green Party councillors Jillian Creasy and Rob Murphy called for cuts in a teenage pregnancy project, young people's activities and green travel to be partially reversed, spending less on political advisors and Community Assembly budgets instead.

The council said six jobs would be left vacant and 13 temporary workers would have contracts cut short by three months this year.

GMB organiser Peter Davis said: "The real problem is the larger 200m cuts, about which there has not been any consultation with unions. The council should come clean on how many jobs will be lost."
