Have your say

Many people want to get involved in activities in their community but it can be difficult to find out about what funding is available, and how to apply for it.
That’s what we do at South Yorkshire Funding Advice Bureau (SYFAB). For over 20 years it was an independent charity, and it is now part of South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation.

We help people think about what they want to do, how much they need and who they could get it from.

While a lot of public funding sources have disappeared in the last few years due to spending cuts, charities and foundations are still here and able to help out groups with grants of all sizes.

There are many funders out there for groups, but it’s important to choose the right ones. This is where we can help.

Our SYFAB website helps groups find the best funders for their project, plus useful information, and we are always a phone call away for anyone who gets stuck.

SYFAB also offers training courses, ranging from bid writing to measuring impact and outcomes. Our online services are free but the courses are charged for so we can sustain our services across South Yorkshire.

A fantastic example of how helpful our training courses can be is that after attending our Reaching Communities course, local charity Homestart’s bid for £1.2million from the Big Lottery was successful.

It is very rewarding, whether it’s an established group getting a large grant or a small group getting their first, to know that we helped them do it.

It means money is coming into the area and being used to improve the quality of life of local people.

Our main goal is to help more community groups learn about the grant funding our there and how to access it, so they can continue their good work.

We often find that the groups who come to us simply do not know where to start, so here are a few golden rules:
* Know what you want funding for.
* Know how much it will cost
* Pick the right funder and always read their guidance notes.
* Always tell them about the benefits the funding will bring to your group and those who you support.

Our golden rules are a good starting point but SYFAB is always here to help so when in doubt, give us a ring. Visit South Yorkshire Funding Advice Bureau
