A youth group which gives Sheffield’s estate kids somewhere to go has come in for high praise.
The Richmond Activity Club, which has been running in the area for two years, was crowned a Community Star at housing association Great Places’ annual awards.
Every Tuesday night youngsters turn out in swarms to take part in activities. Volunteers also try to instil community pride in the children, regularly helping out with Sheffield Wildlife Trust.
Tracy Gill, who helps to run Richmond Activity Club, said: “The award means a lot to our club. We give our free time to the community and it’s so nice to be appreciated.”
The group, part of council service providers Sheffield Futures’ work in the city, is also giving volunteers the chance to complete youth work qualifications.
Regular attendee Sharn Walker, aged eight, said: “I really like the Activity Club. I like the games we play!”
