Climber dies after fall
A WOMAN has died after suffering serious injuries in a fall at a Peak District beauty spot popular with climbers.
The 32-year-old fell while leading a climb near Robin Hood's Cave, on Stanage Edge, which overlooks the picturesque Hope Valley above Hathersage.
A doctor who was climbing nearby rushed to help and offered first aid, along with a member of Edale Mountain Rescue Team who was also in the area scaling the edge.
Within minutes of the accident, at about 1.30pm on Saturday, more members of the team and vehicles were called to the scene.
A road ambulance and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance also attended - but efforts to revive the woman, from Suffolk, were in vain.
A spokesman for Edale Mountain Rescue said: "The casualty was not breathing and advanced life support techniques were employed in an attempt to resuscitate her.
"An RAF Sea King helicopter was requested by the team to winch the casualty directly from the accident site.
"Sadly, despite intense and prolonged efforts by all the medical staff and Edale team members present, she was pronounced dead at the scene."
He added: "Fatal climbing accidents are fortunately extremely rare in the Peak District but they do happen from time to time and they serve to remind everyone who ventures into the outdoors that these activities can never be entirely risk free.
"The team would like to express their very sincere condolences to the family and friends of the casualty."
