Clegg comes bearing gifts

DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg visited Afghanistan bearing gifts from Sheffield - including United and Wednesday shirts and a pewter plate.

The Hallam MP and Lib Dem leader handed over the items to President Hamid Karzai as part of an exchange of presents as a show of friendship.

The pewter plate, from The Famous Sheffield Shop, was engraved with the words 'To His Excellency President Hamid Karzai, with respect and friendship, from the Deputy Prime Minister, the Right Honourable, Nick Clegg MP."

He gave the Blades and Owls shirts to President Karzai's son, Mirwais, who is three years old.

A spokesman for Mr Clegg said: "President Karzai was absolutely delighted with the gifts and there will now be a little piece of Sheffield in the Presidential Palace in Kabul. Hopefully there's a little boy in it as well running around dreaming of playing for either United or Wednesday!"

Mr Clegg met President Karzai during a visit to the country in which he also met British troops in Helmand Province.

He was also shown a school, a clinic and a police station built with British cash and repeated the coalition's pledge that UK forces would be withdrawn from the area by 2015.

Mr Clegg said British troops had helped the war-torn province "turn a corner" and also praised their "bravery and professionalism" in tackling rebel fighters.
