A GRADUATE who worked for free for Sheffield MP Nick Clegg in his constituency office has criticised him for declaring war on unpaid internships.
Kieran Mather, aged 27, spent six months on a work experience placement in Mr Clegg’s city office on the understanding he would get his travel fees paid.
But he claims five years on he is still waiting for the £140 he is owed and said it was ‘ironic’ Deputy PM Mr Clegg was championing a better deal for interns when he did not pay his own.
The MP says he wants all Lib Dem placements awarded on merit rather than by families using social contacts.
A Lib Dem spokesman said the party was unable to comment on individual cases but added: “The party recognises the importance of internships and has designed a new programme to help make sure the positions are as accessible as possible.”
