DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg has launched a campaign aimed at providing hundreds of new homes and jobs in Sheffield.

The Liberal Democrat MP for Sheffield Hallam has written to housing associations in the city and urged them to take advantage of a new funding offer to build new homes.

The Government is offering guarantees of up to £10 billion for building rented homes, providing the assurance required for housing associations and others to invest.

In addition, the Government will provide £300 million funding towards providing up to 15,000 affordable homes.

In 2011/12, 245 affordable rented homes were built in Sheffield, the highest number for at least 10 years.

Mr Clegg said: “Last year saw more affordable rented homes built in Sheffield for at least a decade, but with the new £10bn Government Guarantee and extra capital funds we have announced, I believe we could go even further.”

Meanwhile, Sheffield Council is building more than 2,000 new affordable homes.
