AN ENVIRONMENTAL campaign group is going to the European Supreme Court to challenge the British Government over its failure to meet European air quality standards in cities including Sheffield.
ClientEarth is bringing the case this March after the UK failed to comply with standards. The Government is seeking five more years to fully comply, giving it up to 2020 to meet the standard.
Neil Parry, of Sheffield East End Quality of Life Initiative, which is campaigning for better air quality in areas such as Tinsley and Darnall, which are affected by heavy traffic on the M1, said: “If the Government lose this it will have big implications for Sheffield.
“Failure to address this public health crisis affects many people’s health in Sheffield, causing hundreds of premature deaths and increased hospital admissions.
