Civil war is to take hold in Treeton

BATTLE cries will ring out over Treeton next month when a living history group re-enacts the English Civil War.

The local cricket club will be turned into a battlefield when the Sealed Knot group put on their show over the weekend of July 11 and 12.

The event will also include several marquees housing several 17th century attractions giving visitors a chance to experience what life was like during the period.

It has been organised by the Treeton Local History Group following the idea from chairman Robin Carter, who died just weeks before the re-enactment was due to take place.

Co-organiser Andrew Roddison said: "It was all Robin's idea and he is really the man who should be here telling the story. He was incredibly passionate about it.

"When he moved to Treeton he quickly became an important part of the community and he really moved the history group forward."

The group received funding from the South Yorkshire Community Foundation of nearly 5,000 to ensure the event goes with a bang.

Pauline Grice, chief executive of the foundation, said: "We were sorry to hear of the loss of Robin Carter, but hope the event will be a fitting tribute to mark the commitment and energy he had put into the work of the Treeton Local History Group.

"Funding for events such as this is extremely important to help galvanise communities, encourage inter-generational interaction and foster social cohesion."

The battle commences at 2.30pm on Saturday and at 2pm on Sunday.
