SHEFFIELD is Britain’s leading city for generating green energy through solar panels, according to national statistics.
The AEA Microgeneration Index reveals Sheffield is generating 1.07MW of energy through photovoltaic solar panels – more than any other city and the second-highest of all UK local authorities
Cornwall tops the table, generating just 0.07MW more.
Sheffield Council Cabinet member for climate change, Coun Andrew Sangar, said: “This welcome news is a direct result of the policies the Liberal Democrats have put in place at the Town Hall to help boost micro-generation of renewable energy right across Sheffield.
“In the longer term we are working on a project to offer free solar panels to local residents. This will help us achieve our aim of going down in history as being the first city in the UK to generate enough renewable energy to become self-sufficient.”
