MEMBERS of the City of Sheffield Pipe Band gathered to give a rousing send off to one of their own who is set to move back to his native Scotland.

Gavin Nicol, aged 56, of Thorpe Hesley, has been a member of the band for nine years but has been forced to leave the group due to ill health.

He has been cared for at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and is now being transferred to Edinburgh for treatment and will be looked after by his sister Kate in his native Falkirk.

Band member John Johnson said: “Gavin will be missed by the band and we all wish him well.

“We played some of Gavin’s favourite tunes on the lawn outside the hospital

“We’d all like to give a big thank you to the staff on Ward L1 for the care given to Gavin.”

Gavin has donated his bagpipes to the band to allow developing pipers to learn to play.
