A motorist was caught nearly three times over the drink-drive limit after a Tesco Christmas works party.

Chesterfield magistrates court heard on Friday, January 2, how Stephen Bennett, 52, was stopped by police after he came off the A61 Dronfield slip road at Unstone.

Prosecuting solicitor John Cooper said police first spotted Bennett at Horns Bridge roundabout, Chesterfield, and saw him swerving before heading over Whittington Moor roundabout towards Unstone. Bennett pleaded guilty to exceeding the alcohol drink-drive limit after the incident in December, last year.

Defence solicitor Katie Fowkes said Bennett, of Vauxhall Close, Sheffield, had only intended to show his face at the works party but was persuaded to stay.

Magistrates fined Bennett £520 and ordered him to pay a £52 victim surcharge and £85 costs. He was also disqualified from driving for 25 months.
