Chinese celebration

SHEFFIELD'S Chinese community is planning traditional colourful festivities to mark the New Year celebrations this weekend.

The Year of the Rat will be marked by a city centre parade on Saturday, launched by performances of the Lion and Dragon dance in front of the Town Hall at noon.

A procession will travel along Pinstone Street and down the Moor to London Road, finishing at the offices of the Sheffield and District Chinese Association.

The dragon will be welcomed by the Lord Mayor Coun Arthur Dunworth, while the dragons and lions in the parade will send new year blessings to shops along the route. A further celebration will be held on February 10 by the Sheffield and District Chinese School at King Edward VII lower school on Darwin Lane, Crosspool.

The final event is on February 12 with a Chinese cultural performance in the Oasis at Meadowhall.
