A COACH carrying 31 schoolchildren careered down an embankment after leaving the M1 motorway in South Yorkshire.
The coach pulled over on the exit slip road at junction 37 at Barnsley because of a problem with the brakes but rolled backwards down a 15-metre embankment.
Firefighters said the coach came to a halt without anyone onboard getting hurt, although some children were crying.
Paramedics carried out checks on the children still on the coach before they could be transferred to a second vehicle.
The youngsters, from a primary school near York, had been to a Young Voices singing event at Sheffield Motorpoint Arena.
Crew manager Chris Oxley, from Tankersley fire station, said: “We climbed down the banking, which was around 15 metres from the road, and got on to the coach through the fire exit at the back as the front door was blocked by bushes.
“Paramedics were already onboard checking the children and although some were crying the majority were calm.
“We checked that the coach was stable and kept the children on there until a second one arrived and then between all the emergency services we escorted the children up the banking to the second coach.”
Four adults on board the coach, including the driver, also escaped unharmed.
