YOUNGSTERS in Chesterfield had a brush with the law... when they helped police officers paint a youth centre in the town.

Officers from the Staveley Area Safer Neighbourhood Team and a group of teenagers donned overalls to give Inkersall Youth Shelter a mini-makeover to cover up graffiti daubed over it by vandals.

Police Community Support Officer Tracy Phillips said: “The youngsters meet at the shelter regularly and they asked me if they could paint it as it had a lot of graffiti on it.

“It was great to see them taking the initiative and having some pride in the area so we were happy to help.”

Chesterfield Borough Council paid for the paint and painter and decorator Wayne Atkin provided equipment.

Coun Anthony Hill, said: “It’s fantastic to see the youngsters engaging like this and doing something for the community.” Italso helps to build positive relationships between them and the police.”
