Mucking in was the name of the game for young people on a mission to prove they are model citizens.
Teenagers taking part in Sheffield’s National Citizen Scheme programme rolled up their sleeves to lend a hand at Lowedges Nursery, Lowedges Road.
It was an early rise for the small team as they embarked on a day-long operation to give the grounds a much-needed makeover.
The army of seven volunteers installed a new sandpit for children at the nursery, as well as a vegetable plot designed to teach youngsters how to grow their own.
Meadowhead School student Katie Turton, aged 17, said: “I got involved with National Citizens through school.
“We got in touch with the nursery and asked if there was anything we could do to help them for our social action work.
“We love helping out. It’s good to help local children.”
