A PERVERT who molested a girl when she was eight, then raped her when she was a teenager, has lost a bid to clear his name.

John Patrick Bates, aged 48, was jailed for 17 years in 2009 after being convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault and four rapes.

The Court of Appeal in London heard he wanted leave to challenge his convictions, arguing his trial had not been fair.

But Judge Mr Justice Hickinbottom refused his application, saying: “We have considered these grounds with care - none have any substance.”

Bates, of Valley Road, Chesterfield, terrified his victim into keeping quiet with threats and violence which even led to her needing hospital treatment.
