Chesterfield legend Brian Ashley has been laid to rest.

The 77-year-old – who was better-known as Brian the Singing Miner – died last month.

Mr Ashley became famous in the 1980s as the lead singer of the band Brian the Singing Miner and the Flying Pit Props, packing out clubs across the area.

His 1989 version of Spanish Eyes was the number one selling single in Chesterfield when it was released.

Mr Ashley was cremated in Chesterfield on Tuesday after a service which included the songs Sailing, You’ll Never Walk Alone and, of course, Spanish Eyes.

His coffin was draped in the Chesterfield Football Club banner as he was a massive Spireites fan.

Born in Eckington, Mr Ashley lived locally all his life.

He worked as a miner in his younger days and was involved in the rescue operation following the Markham Pit disaster in 1973.

He continued to work in the mines until he retired following an accident.

Mr Ashley passed away peacefully at East Clune Residential Home in Clowne.

During the service, funeral celebrant Heather Peet said: "Brian will be remembered in many ways – but primarily for his unique voice.

"He'll also be recalled as a hard-working miner and a man who did much for charity.

"Brian was a kind and caring man who would help his fellow residents at East Clune.

"He was a smart gentleman who always wore his black suit.
