The footbridge linking Queen’s Park and Chesterfield town centre will be shut for the next ten weeks.
A Derbyshire County Council spokesman said: “The bridge is closed so that we can replace the parapets. We are replacing them with taller parapets and we’re resurfacing the bridge and adding an anti-slip surface.”
In addition, the A619 Markham Road will be closed from 8pm on Friday until 5am on Saturday so workers can reach the underneath of the bridge.
The road will be closed from West Bars roundabout and its junction with Park Road.
Drivers should find an alternative route.
