COOKS are serving up delicious meals at a South Yorkshire housing scheme after a star chef set up a new base to provide food for residents.

Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food project has moved into the Oak Trees extra care scheme, Moorgate, Rotherham - and the new menu has been proving a hit with diners.

The scheme’s cooks, as well as residents and volunteers from the ministry, prepare dishes at the complex’s cafe using fresh ingredients.

Michelle Jones, housing officer, said the cafe is much busier since Jamie’s team arrived.

“We used to get a handful of people into the cafe, now it’s full every day,” she said.

“Residents get involved with preparing meals and they’re having an influence on the menu, but most of all they are loving the food.”

The Ministry of Food uses Oak Tree facilities to cook food under a contract with Rotherham Council.

The project started when Jamie, above, came to Rotherham to make a TV series in which he encouraged people in the town to eat more healthily. Oak Trees has 28 properties and caters for people aged over 55.
