FIREFIGHTERS have been cooking up a storm with their latest home safety scheme - passing on safety tips in cookery lessons at their station.
Kitchen fires account for nearly two-thirds of all accidental house blazes in South Yorkshire so firefighters in Rotherham have opened up their station for cookery lessons run by a Rotherham Catering College chef.
As well as learning how to cook healthy meals on a budget, residents are given fire safety advice.
The sessions will run for six weeks, with groups of 10.
Crew manager Gary Bruce, overseeing the course, said it gives firefighters a good opportunity to pass on safety advice face-to-face.
He said: “This initiative will give local people the skills to create healthy nutritional meals while on a budget to help them live a more healthy lifestyle.
“The course will teach them about the importance of fire safety and will hopefully increase their confidence in the kitchen.”
