SOUTH Yorkshire shoppers can buy cheap oven chips as part of a campaign to drive down fires.
The fire service has joined forces with the Co-operative Group as part of National Chip Week to provide money-off coupons at a series of events next week.
The vouchers can be redeemed against bags of Co-operative oven chips – in the hope people can be persuaded not to use chip pans.
There have been 465 chip pan fires in South Yorkshire since 2007, resulting in 112 injuries and two deaths.
Steve Makepeace of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, said: “It’s perhaps hard to believe, in this day and age, that people still use chip pans but our data shows they remain a real and present danger.
“You wouldn’t fill a container with flammable liquid and light a flame under it, yet using a chip pan poses the same kind of danger.
Fire service staff will be at Co-operative food stores in Stocksbridge, Mexborough, Hillsborough, Ecclesall Road and Woodhouse.
