Charity in plea for unwanted computer gear

ASPIRE Sheffield, the charity that creates job opportunities for the homeless, vulnerable and socially excluded, has put out an appeal for unwanted domestic computer equipment.

One of the most successful parts of the Hillsborough-based organisation's operation is the online sale of redundant corporate IT equipment.

But with many home computer users also upgrading all the time, there's often a problem with what to do with out of date but still functioning items of computer hardware.

"We are always on the lookout for good quality PC systems," said general manager Dave Metcalfe. "It's an environmentally friendly thing to do because we can sell them on rather than seeing them being trashed.

"And it's good for the community because we can provide good pieces of equipment at excellent prices to low income families and other people who might not otherwise be able to enjoy the benefits of this sort of technology."

It costs Aspire 16 an hour every day of the year simply to keep the doors open at its headquarters in Roselle Street, Hillsborough.

As well as the IT sales end of the operation, other projects for getting people back into the workforce include envelope-stuffing, contract packing and mailing.

Any unwanted items of computer equipment can be taken to Aspire in Roselle Street. Alternatively log on to www.aspire-sheffield.co.uk or call 0114 285 3788.
