SOUTH Yorkshire Fire Authority members are the latest dignitaries to back a new lifesaving fire safety scheme.
Barnsley councillor Jim Andrews, who is chairman of South Yorkshire Fire Authority, is urging residents to sign up for a free service, which reminds them to test their smoke alarms every week.
Coun Andrews said: “Working smoke alarms are the best insurance policy money can buy. But they can only save lives if the batteries are fitted and functioning.”
The campaign is called Press the Button and is being supported by The Star.

Coun Andrews added: “The best way to make sure your smoke alarm is working is to test it weekly and this new service is a great way of making sure you remember to do so.”
Diane Malpass, head of community safety for South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said: “Smoke alarms should be tested regularly, ideally once a week.”
