Councils in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire are to fly the flag for the Commonwealth today.
Rotherham and Chesterfield mayors Coun John Foden and Coun Paul Stone will lead flag-raising ceremonies at both Town Halls to mark Commonwealth Day.
Both are among 500 councils, charities and organisations taking part in the nationwide event, which culminated with the Queen ‘breaking’ the Commonwealth flag outside Westminster Abbey. The symbol of the union of nations will also be flown at various landmarks up and down the UK for the Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth campaign.
Kamalesh Sharma, secretary-general of the Commonwealth, said: “This is a way to join together with others celebrate the variety and diversity of our global family.”
