A spoof story claiming Hollywood actor Jim Carrey was moving to Sheffield has caused a stir on social media.

The story published at klponews.com, quotes Mr Carrey as ‘tired of the LA lifestyle’ and looking to move somewhere new.

It says Mr Carrey wants to live in a place full of ‘real, genuine people’ and Sheffielders fit that bill. He adds: “I’m not retiring, I’m just looking for a change in life and I think I’ve found that in Sheffield.”

The story has been shared plenty of times on Facebook and Twitter, with some wondering why the star of The Truman Show and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective would swap the glamour of Hollywood for life in the steel city, and others welcoming Mr Carrey with open arms.

On Facebook Linda Barradale wrote: “Sheffield people are genuine, hope you have a dog, look forward to seeing you walking it in Endcliffe Park and seeing you at Bramall Lane.”

And Emma Major tweeted: “Is Jim Carrey moving to #Sheffield? Please say it’s true.”

But a closer look at klponews.com reveals it to be a satirical website. It’s ‘about’ section says: “KLPO News is a fantasy news website. Most articles on klponews.com are satire or pure fantasy.”

And Mr Carrey himself appeared to dispel the rumours when he tweeted: “I love LA and all the kooks who live here. If u read otherwise, it’s just the mischief of those who weren’t their parents’ 1st priority.”
